Additional Language (FAL) Learners in South Africa
Introduction
Selecting age-appropriate and pedagogically sound reading materials is critical in the
Intermediate Phase (Grades 4–6) First Additional Language (FAL) classroom. Learners
between the ages of 9 and 12 are in a crucial stage of language acquisition and
cognitive development. At this phase, they require texts that not only enhance their
English proficiency but also contribute to their moral, emotional, and cultural growth.
This assignment provides a comprehensive evaluation of two prescribed texts to
determine their suitability for use in the Intermediate Phase FAL curriculum in South
African schools. The evaluation focuses on four core aspects: the relevance of each
text’s language and thematic content to the age group; the clarity and strength of the
moral and ethical lessons conveyed; the capacity of the text to support learners’
emotional and psychological development; and the extent to which the texts promote
inclusivity and cultural representation.

In the Intermediate Phase, learners are still developing foundational language skills,
particularly in their First Additional Language. Therefore, texts used at this level must
employ simple, clear, and engaging language. The first text under evaluation
demonstrates a strong alignment with the language proficiency of Intermediate Phase
learners. It features straightforward sentence construction, familiar vocabulary, and well-
paced dialogue that makes the story accessible to readers still becoming comfortable
