QUESTION 1
Diversity on the African Continent as a Fuel for Conflict (20 Marks)
Africa is renowned for its immense diversity, encompassing a vast array of
ethnicities, languages, religions, cultures, and political systems. While this diversity
enriches the continent, it can also, unfortunately, be viewed as a contributing factor
to conflict in certain contexts. This essay will discuss how different aspects of this
diversity can fuel conflict, acknowledging that it's a complex interplay of factors and
diversity is not inherently conflictual.
1. Ethnic and Linguistic Diversity:
Competition for Resources and Power:** The presence of numerous ethnic groups
often leads to competition for limited resources such as land, water, minerals, and
access to political power. In cases where one group dominates the political
landscape or enjoys disproportionate economic benefits, other groups may feel
marginalized and resentful. This perceived inequality can lead to conflict, as groups
vie for a greater share of the pie. Examples include the conflicts in Rwanda (Hutu vs.
Tutsi) and South Sudan (various ethnic rivalries).
Identity Politics and Mobilization:** Politicians often exploit ethnic or linguistic
differences to mobilize support, framing issues in terms of "us" versus "them." This
can heighten tensions and incite violence, particularly when historical grievances or
perceived injustices are invoked. This can lead to the perception of one's own group
being under threat, justifying violence in their perceived defense.
