NSER 7410 MODULE 4 ACTUAL EXAM WITH COMPLETE SOLUTIONS

What are the indications for an Art Line

Hemodynamically unstable patients requiring continuous monitoring of blood pressure

Frequent sampling of blood for laboratory analysis. For example, when frequent arterial
blood gases are required for an acutely ill patient

What is an Art line and what does it monitor

A canula inserted into a major peripheral artery (Radial, Femoral), that provides continuous
monitoring of the MAP, SBP, DBP

ABP is related to cardiac output and is influenced by vascular tone

What is central venous monitoring, and what does a CVP tell you

A central venous catheter is inserted into the vena cava or in a central vein that is in close
proximity to the vena cava (e.g., jugular vein, subclavian vein), with the tip located in the
Right Atrium

The diastolic pressure is measured at the end of diastole when the ventricles are relaxed

CVP is a determinant of preload

What are the indications for central venous monitoring

, Hypovolemia (e.g. hemorrhage)

Hypervolemia (e.g. fluid overload secondary to heart failure)

Rapid fluid replacement where large bore IV is required

Administration of meds that must be given centrally (e.g., norepinephrine).

What is the normal, or recommended range for CVP

2-6mmHg

Describe the tubing in an Art Line

Regular IV tubing from the bag to the transducer

High pressure tubing from transducer to patient

Facilitates the continuous flush of 3mL/hour to keep line patent

Stop cocks and a reservoir that can facilitate the return of the "discard" blood after
sampling

What is an Art line transducer

Senses the pressure as blood flows past the tip of the cannula, and converts it into a digital
read out

Pressure is sensed via the column of fluid between the patient and the transducer
