Minutes of the Meeting: Agenda Item 2.2 — Possible Ways of Getting Adequate
Water Supply in Soshangana Township

The Civic Organisation meeting proceeded to agenda item 2.2, which addressed the
ongoing water crisis in Soshangana Township. The Chairperson, Ms Tancred, opened
the discussion by inviting the Deputy Chairperson, Mr Muzila, to provide background on
the matter.

Mr Muzila reported that meetings had been held with both the Municipal Manager, Mr
Malatjie, and the Ward Councillor, Comrade Vusani. Although there was a promise
made in June 2024 regarding the construction of two water reservoirs and a pipeline
connection from Naledi Dam, the project has not commenced as scheduled, leading the
community to believe the promises were not genuine.

A range of views were shared by attendees. While some residents expressed frustration
and proposed protest action, others advocated for a constructive and community-led
approach. Ms Snyman proposed starting a community-driven water initiative called the
myWater Project, which would focus on raising funds to drill boreholes within the
township. Concerns were raised regarding transparency and possible misuse of funds,
but several members supported the proposal, noting the importance of local solutions.

Comrade Sfiso outlined a step-by-step plan for the initiative, including determining the
number of boreholes, obtaining quotes from reputable drilling companies, selecting the
most affordable option, and involving residents in contributing financially. It was agreed
that each of the township’s four sections would receive one borehole, each equipped
with two 5,000-litre tanks. Local residents would be hired to monitor and manage the
system.

It was also decided to form a steering committee for the myWater Project. The following
members were elected:

• Chairperson: Ms Hlabangane
