Agenda Item 2.2 – Possible Ways to Get Adequate Water Supply in
Soshangana Township
The Chairperson, Ms Tancred, opened the discussion under agenda item 2.2 by
inviting the Deputy Chairperson, Mr Muzila, to provide background on the ongoing
water crisis in Soshangana Township. Mr Muzila reported that previous meetings
had been held with the Municipal Manager, Mr Malatjie, and the Ward Councillor,
Comrade Vusani. Although promises were made on 25 June 2024 that construction
of two water reservoirs and a pipeline from Naledi Dam would begin on 1 November
2024, no action has taken place since, leading to rising frustration among residents.
Mevrou Steyn expressed outrage and called for an indefinite strike. However, Mr
Deacon opposed protest action, arguing that protests are often ineffective. Ms
Snyman proposed a community-led water supply initiative named myWater project to
raise funds for independent water provision. While Boyza expressed concern over
possible corruption, Comrade Sfiso supported the initiative and proposed a detailed
plan. This included determining the number of boreholes needed, requesting
quotations from drilling companies, and selecting the lowest quotation before
deciding on household contributions.
Mandla agreed with the plan and suggested immediate action. The Chairperson
proposed that each of the township's four sections should receive one borehole,
each fitted with two 5000-litre tanks. A community member would be hired in each
section to oversee water supply and maintenance.
Mr Muzila recommended forming a steering committee. Ms Hlabangane was
unanimously elected Chairperson of the myWater project, with Boyza as Treasurer,
Mama Dikeledi as Secretary, and Mr Smangaliso as an additional member. Their
roles were defined by Ms Tancred: Ms Hlabangane will report on project progress,
Boyza will handle banking matters, and Mama Dikeledi will write fundraising letters.
The community will reconvene to discuss household contributions once quotations
are received.
