1.1 Improving health using basic food groups (4x2=8)
To improve the Grade 1 learner’s health and reduce frequent sickness, parents can use the basic food
groups as follows:
Firstly, carbohydrates should be included, such as wholegrain bread, pap, samp, or brown rice. These
foods provide the energy needed for concentration, physical activity, and body warmth during the day.
Secondly, proteins are essential. For example, giving the child boiled eggs or peanut butter sandwiches
for lunch, and including beans or chicken in supper, will help build strong muscles, repair body tissues,
and strengthen immunity against diseases.
Thirdly, fruits and vegetables should be eaten daily. Parents can include oranges or bananas in the
lunchbox and add cooked spinach, pumpkin, or cabbage at supper to supply vitamins and minerals
needed for fighting infections and keeping skin, eyes, and organs healthy.
Lastly, dairy products such as fresh milk, maas (amasi), or yoghurt should be given. For example, giving
a glass of milk before school will provide calcium and vitamin D for strong bones and teeth, preventing
weakness or dental problems.
