Title: Climate Change, Water Insecurity, and the Path to
Sustainable Development in the Global South
Introduction
Climate change is among the most pressing global challenges of
the 21st century, with far-reaching impacts on ecosystems,
economies, and human well-being. One of its most severe
effects is on water security—a foundational component of
sustainable development and food security. As water becomes
increasingly scarce and unpredictable due to rising temperatures,
erratic rainfall, glacial retreat, and sea-level rise, its implications
for agriculture, health, and livelihoods become more
pronounced. This is particularly evident in the Global South,
where communities often lack the institutional, infrastructural,
and financial capacity to adapt effectively. This essay explores
the intersection of climate change and water security, its
cascading effects on the three dimensions of food security—
availability, accessibility, and stability—and critically evaluates
how globalisation, trade, and environmental policies influence
these dynamics. Additionally, the paper draws lessons from
China’s environmental policy and explores the importance of
traditional knowledge systems, climate finance, and
international legal frameworks in responding to water-related
climate challenges.
