AC 2.2 Evaluate media in campaigns for change Unit 1 Changing awareness of crime

Blogs
A blog is a regularly updated website or web page, typically run by an
individual or small group, which is written in an informal or conversational
style.
An advantage of using a blog in a campaign is that anyone can set blogs up and
they are free of charge. As well as this, they allow people to express their views
and opinions on specific topics. There are up-to-date information and statistics
on blogs that will keep the content fresh and interesting. Usually, there will be
links to social media pages, which allow readers to find out more and donate
to the campaign. Furthermore, they do not just contain writing; they also have
video links, pictures and links to other similar websites that may also be of
interest to the reader.
However, blogs are extremely hard to keep up to date and they can become
quite time-consuming for the author. As well as this, it is becoming an out-of-
date method because many people prefer to use social media as it can be
more appealing to a younger audience. A blog has to be found in order to find
in information, so generally there will be limited audience of people who are
really interested in the cause or the campaign.
The environmental campaign group Greenpeace uses a blog that has videos,
images and articles included on it, and the majority of posts have been shared
via social media platforms, helping to wider their audience. Some of the things
have been shared nearly 1,000, which shows that the blog is effective in raising
awareness to the public.

Social networking
Social networks are websites such as Facebook and Twitter, which are
dedicated to allowing people to communicate with one another.
When used for campaign purposes, social networking allows videos,
information and other forms of communication to spread quickly and reach a
wider audience. Approximately 2.3 billion people use social media, so a
campaign on one of these platforms will raise a great deal of awareness in a
short space of time in a very cost-effective way.
However, hackers can get onto the network pages and alter information. There
is also the possibility of internet trolls, who send upsetting messages that can
deter people from using the sites.
The ice bucket challenge was used to raise money and awareness of ALS
(amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) disease. The campaign posted o Facebook and
social networking sites, requesting people to pour a bucket of ice-cold water
over their head and nominate others to do the same. In turn, people would

donate money to see this happen. By the end of the campaign it had proved to
be a very effective media method as $115 million was raised.

TV advertising
Television advertising are a span of television programming that are produced
and paid for by an organisation. They convey a message, or market a product
or service.
Advertisements are usually a very effective use of moving imagery and
sometimes include music that fits with the product or campaign. Additionally,
they can make issues more memorable for the audience by the use of celebrity
endorsement to seize their attention. Also, they will reach a wide audience due
to the number of viewers, especially during prime-time slots.
However, adverts can be extremely expensive to make, costing thousands of
pounds. The cost of the advert increases, especially if scheduled for a prime-
time slot. Moreover, many people can skip adverts if a programme is recorded
or simply ignore it if they are not interested in the content. Sometimes, the
adverts can be quite graphic with scenes of death occurring in a horrific way
and may upset younger and more vulnerable viewers who may be concerned
or associated with the topic. This may have a negative effect on the campaign.

Event
An advantage of public events is that they may be shown on a news
programme, which increases publicity, allowing more people to become aware
of the campaign. People are able to contribute to the campaign without having
to attend the actual event. For example, they can donate by telephone or over
the internet.
Disadvantages of public events include things not going according to plan, for
example people may not attend or watch the event in the numbers
anticipated. They may also need funding before the event can take place. One
of the biggest charity events was the Live Aid concert, organised by Sir Bob
Geldof in 1985, to support famine relief in Africa.

Public appearances
Public appearances are often used to support a campaign; they involve the
promoters attending an event to talk in public to raise awareness of the aims
of the campaign.
