Traditional Supervisor - Answers - -Expect high levels of measurable activities. Expect
officers to efficiently respond to calls for service. Place great emphasis on reports and
other paperwork. Provide a substantial amount of instruction and oversight. Are task
oriented. Place greater emphasis on punishment than reward, and do not have a great
deal of power in the department.
Innovative Supervisor - Answers - Most closely associated with community policing.
Opposite of traditional supervisors. Generally do no place a great deal of emphasis on
citations and arrests. Depend more on developing relationships with subordinates as
opposed to using power to control. Good mentors and tend to coach. Ultimate goal is to
develop officers so they can solve problems and have good relations with citizens.
Sometimes have problems with officers who are task oriented and neglect community
relations.
Competition - Answers - The superior intervenes and meets with the combatants,
forcing them to present all facts about the situation and than making a decision. The
conflict becomes a competitive situation with a clear winner and loser. Involved a
maximum amount of assertiveness with little or no cooperation on the part of the
supervisor. Does not resolve the underlying cause of the conflict and may result in its
reoccurring at a later time. Should only be last resort.
Compromise - Answers - Involves a mix of cooperation and assertiveness. Intervening
supervisor searches for a solution that satisfies all parties involved in the conflict.
Generally everyone gains something, but at the same time it accommodates others.
Essentially a search of middle ground. However, few officers are totally happy with
arrangement.
Collaboration - Answers - Supervisors attempt to work through problems to fully
address everyone's concerns. Sergeants should consult with or involve managers when
attempting to solve problems. Managers often have to give their consent to solutions.
Involves all parties discussing the issues and looking for solutions. Debate helps clear
any impediments and allows participants to understand the other sides issues.
Collaboration is akin to problem solving when the problem or cause of conflict is
identified and removed or solved.
