Explain the importance of worship in Christianity (5)/(8)

Christians believe worship is an integral part of being a Christian. This is because worship is a way for
them to express their adoration and praise for God. This is very important for Christians to maintain
their relationship with God. The Ten Commandments state ‘Keep the Sabbath day Holy’. This
commandment can be interpreted as a command to worship God. This is demonstrated through many
Christians attending Sunday Church services. Furthermore, worship is integral to Christians as it
strengthens their community and connections with other Christians around them. The importance of
community worship is implied through the quote: ‘Where two or three gather in my name, there I am
with them’ (Mathew). As well as individual worship, where Christians have a private, informal
conversation with God, community worship is an important opportunity for them to build good
relationships with those of the same faith.

Some churches, such as the Church of England and Catholic Church, carry out liturgical worship. This
type of worship follows a set pattern and established rituals. This is important for Christians who
attend these churches as the Eucharist/Holy Communion is included - this reminds them of Jesus’
sacrifice during the crucifixion. Other churches, such as Evangelical and Charismatic churches, have
an informal approach to worship. This is important for Christians who attend these churches because
it allows them to be spontaneous in prayer - some believe that the Holy Spirit allows them to speak ‘in
tongues’. Other Christian movements have moved away from the traditional church building for
worship and will meet in other settings such as cafes or community centres. For example, Quakers
meet in meeting houses to worship instead.

Describe Evangelical worship (5)

Evangelical Christians use Informal worship to express their adoration for God. Informal worship
involves a service where there are no set prayers or hymns, but often music, singing and dancing.
Some Evangelical Christians gather together in congregations and express their praise through
spontaneous dancing. These forms of worship are conveyed in the quote: ‘Worship is making music

, to the Lord, through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs’ (St Paul) Furthermore, Evangelical christians
believe that they are moved by the holy spirit during worship. This may involve falling into trances, and
speaking in tongues (unknown languages), just like Jesus’ apostles on Pentecost, where the Holy
Spirit too gave them the ability to speak in different languages.

Describe how the society of friends worship (Quakers) (5)

Quakers do not have a special building or set space for worship - they tend to meet in meeting
houses. They use informal worship, like Evangelical christians, have no set prayers or sermons.
Instead, they sit in meditative silence, where they have an opportunity for personal reflection and
mindfulness. They believe that this helps them to become closer to the congregation, and to God by
sitting amidst his presence. Sometimes, a quaker may choose to speak and voice an inner feeling.
This is known as giving ‘Ministry’. Furthermore, quakers have no leader. This is shown through most
congregations sitting in a circle, to show that there is no hierarchy, and that everyone is equal.

Describe how Christians pray (5)

Christians pray individually. This can be in the home in their bedrooms, in Church, etc. Individual
prayer involves privately speaking to God in an informal manner. Christians may refer to God as
‘Father’, or ‘Dad’, and speak to Him like He is a relative/friend. This makes their connection with God
stronger, as this is their way of communicating with Him. During individual prayer, they may ask for
forgiveness (confession), ask for something (supplication), or say thank you (Thanksgiving). Another
way some Christians pray is through the recital of set prayers during Church services. This is also
known as Liturgical service, practised by Catholics. Liturgical service involves a set reading of the
certain Bible passages, reciting set sermons, and singing set hymns. For example, the recital of the
Lord’s Prayer from the Book of Common Prayer. On the other hand, some denominations, such as
Evangelicals believe that reciting set prayers causes people to just end up repeating them without
thinking carefully about the meaning. These denominations, e.g. Protestants prefer to pray using
Informal worship, where the services are more spontaneous.

Explain the importance of prayer in Christianity (5)/(8)

Prayer is important for Christians because they believe that when they pray together, Jesus is with
them. This is shown in Mathew where it says ‘Where two or more gather in my name, there I am with
them’. This shows that praying is integral for Christians to strengthen their relationship with God.
Furthermore, prayer is important in Christianity because it is a way for them to express adoration
(love), Confession (Saying sorry), Thanksgiving (saying thank you) and Supplication (asking for
something). This can be done through Individual (Informal) worship, where Christians may talk to
God privately. Christians will also pray during times of need, as they believe God will provide comfort
and support. This idea is furthered as Jesus prayed to God before his arrest and crucifixion.

Furthermore, different denominations use different types of prayer in Christianity. Set prayers are an
important part of liturgical worship in the Catholic Church and Anglican Church, for example, The
Lord’s Prayer is often read aloud by the congregation during church services. On the other hand,
spontaneous prayers are important at informal services in the Pentecostal Church. They believe that
the Holy Spirit is with them and enables them to speak ‘in tongues’. Another reason as to why prayer
is important in christianity, especially for non-catholics is to ask for forgiveness of their sins. This is
because protestants do not perform one of the sacraments of confession, hence it is important that
they ask for forgiveness privately.
