1. What were some advantages of the North at the start of the Civil War? yasamin

● Only one third joined the confederates, making the union more advantageous

● the north had a larger population and this helped because they would have a larger army the
north had a better economy because they would produce almost 90 percent of the total
manufacturing

The north had a population of 71 percent, 92 percent manufactured goods, 56 percent exports,
72 percent of miles of railroad track, 67 percent of farms, 94 percent of iron production, and 82
percent banking capital.

2. What were some advantages of the South at the start of the Civil War? (Philip)

● The south had 7 out of 8 military colleges, which supplied the south with trained soldiers.
● Raised money by taxing trade; Still in poor financial conditions
● The south was the defender, which gave them an advantage, because they fought in their own
territory and were familiar with the landscape.
● The home advantage also made for shorter ways to supply the soldiers with food and
necessities.
● They had agriculture of valuable products in the south, which made them an important trading
partner.
● The South was really motivated by their idea of keeping slavery in their territory.


3. How did the North finance the war? Giovanni

during the civil war , in the north paid for the war by selling bonds, raising taxes, and printing paper
money called “greenbacks”. they also borrowed money from foreign banks and set up a national
banking system to get more funds. these ways helped them keep fighting.


4. How did the South finance the war? Amber Andy

● The South wanted to rely on trade taxes, but port blockades reduced income.
● New taxes, but many refused to pay.
● Printing too much money caused severe inflation.

The Confederate government turned to issuing bonds and printing currency to generate the revenue
needed to run government affairs and fund the war effort.
