PROLOGUE Introduction to and summary of the play
ACT 1 SCENE 1 Fighting between Montagues and Capulets, Prince has to intervene to stop them.
Romeo’s parents worry about his strange behaviours, and Romeo tells Benvolio about his
love for Rosaline
ACT 1 SCENE 2 Paris meets Capulet and asks to marry Juliet, Capulet tells him to ask her himself at the ball.
The servant who is supposed to delver the invitations cannot read, so asks Romeo and
Benvolio for help to read the names of the people. Benvolio wants to attend with Romeo to
get Romeo’s mind odd of Rosaline.
ACT 1 SCENE 3 Lady Capulet tells Juliet and her Nurse about Paris and his proposal
ACT 1 SCENE 4 Benvolio and Mercutio persuade Romeo to join them in masquerade and go to the ball
ACT 1 SCENE 5 Romeo sees Juliet and immediately falls in love with her
Tybalt recognises a Montague at the ball, he wants to start a fight but Capulet stops him
Romeo and Juliet talk together and kiss
The ball ends, and as Romeo leaves with his friends, he realises that Juliet is a Capulet
Juliet asks the Nurse about the man she was speaking with, and she finds out that it is
Romeo the heir of the Montagues
CHORUS Explains Romeo and Juliet's intensifying love, and their determination to overcome the
challenges posed by their rival families.
ACT 2 SCENE 1 As they leave, Romeo hides from his friends as he looks for Juliet, meanwhile they joke
about Romeo’s love for Rosaline
ACT 2 SCENE 2 Juliet stands at her balcony and professes her love for Romeo, unaware than he is listening.
Romeo reveals himself and also professes his love to her. Juliet is hesitant about Romeo’s
love for her, but her reassures her.
Juliet tells Romeo that she will send someone to him the next day at 9 in the morning to see
if his love is honourable and true, and if he truly intends to wed her.
ACT 2 SCENE 3 Romeo asks the Friar to marry him to Juliet that day, he is sceptical, however he agrees with
the hope that it will end the family feud.
ACT 2 SCENE 4 Benvolio and Mercutio continue to make fun of Romeo and his weakness and love for
Rosaline. Tybalt has also sent a letter challenging Romeo to a duel.
The Nurse comes to speak to Romeo, and he tells her of the arrangement with the Friar, and
asks her to relay this to Juliet, which the Nurse agrees to do.
ACT 2 SCENE 5 Juliet is impatiently and eagerly waiting for her Nurse, who jokingly takes her time in telling
Juliet the plan. Eventually , she does and Juliet leaves to go the Friar.
ACT 2 SCENE 6 Romeo and Juliet are married by the Friar
ACT 3 SCENE 1 Romeo, Benvolio and Mercutio encounter Tybalt on the streets, where Tybalt challenges
Romeo to a duel in person. Romeo refuses, and Mercutio outraged draws his own sword and
fights Tybalt, resulting in his own death. In turn, Romeo now outraged by the death of
Mercutio, fights Tybalt, and ends up killing him.
Romeo flees. The Prince arrives at the scene with the Capulets and Montagues, Benvolio
tells him what happened, the Capulets demand his death. Instead, the Prince exiles Romeo
from Verona.
ACT 3 SCENE 2 The Nurse brings the news of Romeo’s exile to Juliet, who was eagerly awaiting him. But she
says that Romeo will still come to Juliet for their wedding night.
ACT 3 SCENE 3 Friar Lawrence consoles Romeo. The Nurse arrives and gives Romeo a ring from Juliet and
assures him of her love.
Friar Lawrence comes up with a plan for Juliet to escape with Romeo.
ACT 3 SCENE 4 Following the deaths of Mercutio and Tybalt, Capulet is worried about Juliet and thinks it
