A lot of misbeliefs about sports medicine. For example:
‘Only for professional and elite athletes…….’ They are also there for recreational sporters for
example.
‘Magician/doctor who runs into the pitch……’and uses his sponge/spray to fix the players.
This is not the typical job. Serious job in the hospital etc. Most of the time it is the trainer who
runs into the pitch.
‘Doping’ (always described by sports physicians). In the NL there are guidelines which
prohibit physicians to prescribe these medicine. Sports physicians are not allowed to prescribe
drugs. Banned substances
Sports medicine is a recognized medical specialism
Main things they deal with:
Prevention/management of injuries & disease
Both athletes and people who exercise
Load vs load capacity (balance between them)
It is a serious job. Unique knowledge and expertise of sports.
More people die because of phycical inactivity than because of ’smokadiabesity’!
