ASSIGNMENT 03: Comprehensive Response
2025
Title:
Towards Transformative Teaching: Preparing South African FET Learners for the
Fourth Industrial Revolution
Introduction
South Africa's educational system is undergoing significant changes due to
technological advances, economic inequality, and the evolving role of the teacher. The
Further Education and Training (FET) Phase is a critical period for shaping young
individuals for academic achievement and responsible citizenship. In this context,
teachers are not merely content deliverers, but also moral guides, digital facilitators, and
agents of social transformation. This assignment explores key themes central to
effective teaching in South Africa today. These include a personal teaching philosophy,
curriculum policy insights, the impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), and
strategic reflections on teaching in future classrooms. Each section engages with
relevant theory, policy documents, and scholarly sources to ensure a deeply analytical
and informed discussion.
1. My Teaching Philosophy
1.1 Motivation and Professional Commitment
Becoming a teacher is a deliberate choice driven by the belief that education is
essential for individual growth and societal transformation. The decision to teach Life
Sciences in the FET phase reflects a passion for promoting scientific literacy and
environmental awareness among adolescents, especially in a context where such
knowledge has both personal and national value. This stance assumes that education
can challenge inequality and build agency, especially among disadvantaged youth.
