Creation
1.1 Michelangelo's Creation of Adam
How does the Creation of Adam reflect Catholic belief?
The creation of Adam was paint by Michelangelo in the 16th Century.
Creation is the act through which God made the universe, this story is told in the first book of the
bible (Genesis). This provides the foundation of Christian beliefs about creation and about gods
nature as a creator

,  Adam is not yet fully alive, he's waiting for God's touch to bring him to life showing
that humanity depends on God for life
 Adam is shown as a perfect man, full of strength and potential reflects the teaching
god made everything 'very good' - Genesis 1:31
 God is shown bringing a human to life rather than any other species showing the
teaching all humans are unique as they are specially created by god and are in close
contact with him
 God and Adam are reaching out their hand to each other reflecting there is a longing
for a close relationship between God and humanity
 God is carried through the air by a group of angels showing he is transcendent (beyond
and outside life on earth and the universe
 God looks much older than Adam showing God is ancient and eternal but humanity is
not
 God and Adam both look powerful and muscular, lying in similar position reflecting the
teaching that humanity is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27)

Paintings allow artists to express their ideas that can be difficult to convey in words. It can inspire
people and help them understand their faith but they are limited to what the artwork can how. For
example the creation of Adam doesn't show;
1. God brought Adam by breathing into his nostrils rather than touching him
2. In the painting God and Adam are the same size, suggesting they are equal but this
goes against Catholic teaching

1.2 Other Christian art depicting creation
How does Meniere's mosaic reflect Catholic beliefs?

,  Lines extended from God's hands to the edge of circle (meaning edge of universe)
reflects the idea that god created everything in the universe and his influence and
power touches all things
 God's hand is large compared to size of cloud above it, helping to show God's
greatness and power

Comparing Meniere's mosaic and Creation of Adam
Creation of Adam Meniere's mosaic
Gods Both show god is a creator Both show god is a creator
Nature Both show God is powerful and eternal Both show God is powerful and eternal
How God God is shown as an old man. Some Christians Only god's hand is shown, some
is show abject to this as they think an eternal god Christians think this is a symbol of God's
should not be shown as an ageing man creative power and it is a more
acceptable way to show God, he's infinite
God's Focuses on the act of God creating humanity More abstract, conveying an greater
role in so conveys more about the relationship sense that God is always creating
creation between God and humanity everything, but shows less about God's
relationship with humanity

1.3 Creation and the nature of God in Genesis 1
Creation in Genesis 1
Genesis 1 describes God's creation of the universe, how he created in 6 days e’d using the power is
his word to bring things into being
Unlike Christians, Catholics do not believe Genesis 1 was a scientific account of creation, however
they do believe it traches important truths about God's nature and role in creation.

What does Genesis 1 teach about the nature of God?
God is a creator
 God is the only creator, they should only worship one God, Him
 All of creation is special because it's been created by God therefore it should be cared
and looked after
 Genesis 1:27 God created humans in his own image so humans share qualities with
God which allows them to have a close relationship with God

God is omnipotent
 'God saw everything that he had made and indeed it was very good'
 God has the power to do whatever he want; can create things from nothing
 Genesis 1:31 says God made everything 'very good'. God is powerful and can do
everything exactly the way he wants
 Belief in God's omnipotence inspires Christians to trust God

God is transcendent
 Then God said 'let there be light' and there was light
 God only needs his word to create things, God is completely above and beyond the
world
 God is beyond human understanding, inspiring awe
