Cold War Revision
The Grand Alliance - England, USA and Russia
England - PM Winston Churchill
USA - President (Frederick) Roosevelt
Russia - President (Josef) Stalin

USA and UK suspicious of USSR
USSR suspicious of USA and UK

They had a marriage of convenience to destroy Hitler and end the
Nazi Regime. Signed United Nations Declaration in 1942, New Years’
Day.

Winston Churchill said “The only thing worse than allies is not having
them.”

In a capitalist state, the economy is largely free from state control,
while the government is democratically elected and freedom of
speech is cherished.
In contrast, a communist state is administered from the centre, with
control of the economy and society strictly in the hands of the
Communist Party-led government.

Communism has a one party rule.
Capitalism is a multi-party democracy.

Sphere of influence - A geographical area which shows who
someone has authority over.

Tehran
Yalta
Potsdam

, Tehran Conference (1943)
Needed a military plan to defeat Hitler - open a second front
Talked about possible future of Germany and Eastern Europe with
Hitler gone

- Agreed to open a second front to split German defences
Operation Overlord in France 1944
- Argument on whether it should be close to France or USSR, but
Stalin was convinced the West would then use this as a
launchpad to invade USSR and destroy Communism
- USSR agreed to declare war on Japan and did so 3 months
after Germany’s defeat
- Unofficial agreement to change Polish borders
- Unofficial agreement about letting Eastern European countries
to decide if they want to be part of USSR or not (elections)

If agreements had not been made and tensions had not been kept under
control, then the Yalta Conference wouldn’t happen.

Yalta Conference (1945, before Germany’s defeat)
Decide future of Germany after defeat and to decide future of
Poland’s borders - which sphere of influence they would be in
Decide when USSR should declare war on Japan

- When Germany was defeated, they lost land, were
demilitarised and had to pay $20 billion in reparations
- Start plans for Germany to be split into four zones
- Nazi Party was banned and war criminals went to trial
- Eastern European countries were able to hold free elections
- United Nations to be set up
- USSR to declare war on Japan and would gain lands invaded
by Japan
