RFP2601 ASSIGNMENT 2 ANSWERS
2025

, RFP2601 ASSESSMENT 2

QUESTION 1: (30)

1.1 Two reasons why reading is an essential life skill:

Access to Information and Knowledge: Reading unlocks a vast world of information.
Without strong reading skills, individuals struggle to understand instructions, news
articles, scientific discoveries, historical context, etc. This limits their capacity to
learn, grow, and participate fully in society. Justification: Being unable to access and
process information effectively limits educational and professional opportunities.

Enhanced Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving: Reading exposes us to different
perspectives, arguments, and ideas. It forces us to analyse, evaluate, and
synthesize information, which builds our critical thinking skills. This also develops
skills in problem-solving which require understanding written instructions and
complex concepts. Justification: In a world where solutions to problems are readily
available, critical thinking will ensure one can evaluate solutions and make the best
decisions.

1.2 Importance of developing reading skills in the foundation phase:

The foundation phase lays the groundwork for all future learning. If learners don't
develop basic reading skills (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary,
comprehension) during this period, they will struggle to access the curriculum in later
grades. This leads to academic difficulties, reduced confidence, and a higher risk of
dropping out of school. Early intervention is key to ensuring lifelong literacy.
