, Being a Leader and a Follower: Effective Individual and Team Contributor
I am a leader, but I know how to be an effective follower. In certain situations, my role is
reversed, and I am needed as a follower. Being able to complete my job responsibilities in both
roles is important when it comes to being an effective individual and team contributor. I will be
explaining my personal leadership style, my personality assessment results, management
approaches, and how my leadership style and personality impact organizational culture and
structure.
My Leadership Style
My leadership style is democratic and participative. Meaning that I value everyone’s
input within my team when making decisions and solving problems. I support my team
members and make them feel like valued parts of a diverse whole. This type of leadership style
ensures that everyone is heard and supported. This style also assures that the power structure is
fairly distributed amongst managers and employees. The only problem that someone with my
leadership style may encounter is when under time constraints, certain decisions may not be
made promptly due to the need for everyone’s input. Sometimes, getting everyone’s input is not
ideal when critical decisions need to be made. This is something I will have to work on
overtime. As a leader, I must learn to trust my decision-making and decide on what I think is
best and then implement that decision with confidence.
Personality Assessment. The Big Five Personality Assessment, created by Paul Costa
and Jeff McCrae, focuses on five traits. The five traits are openness, agreeableness, extraversion,
conscientiousness, and neuroticism. Based on my test results I have high levels of openness,
agreeableness, conscientiousness, and extraversion. I have a low level of neuroticism. These
results indicate that I have the correct personality traits to be an effective leader. Through the Big
