, What are the d-block elements?
➢ The elements present in group 3-12 in a periodic table, in which the d-orbitals are successively filled in
four long periods are called the d-block elements.
➢ The d-block elements are classified on the basis of the electrons that get filled in d-orbitals. These are
in to four series known as the transition series:
Period No. Transition Series Name of the Elements General
Series Electronic
Configuration
4 1st 3d-series 21Sc to 30Zn
5 2nd 4d-series 39Y to 48Cd (n-1)d1-10ns0-2
6 3rd 5d-series 57La , 72Hf to 80Hg
7 4th 6d-series 89Ac, 104Rf to 112Cn
➢ The d-block elements are called transition elements because of the fact that their chemical properties
transitional between the s-block elements and the p-block elements.
➢ As per the IUPAC, the elements with incompletely filled d-orbitals in their elemental state or in their ox
state are called the transition elements. The incompletely filled d-orbitals make transition elements dif
from the non-transition elements.
, Zn, Cd and Hg- Non Transition Elemen
➢ Although Zn, Cd and Hg are d-block elements, they are non-transition elements because these elemen
completely filled d-orbitals in their elemental state as well as in their oxidized state.

these elements have their d-orbitals incompletely filled.
