Adipose Tissue
Adipose tissue,(body fat) is a loose connective tissue composed mostly of adipocytes
Adipose tissue normally represents 15%-20% of the body weight in men < women
Adipocytes specialize in concentrating triglycerides as lipid droplets.
Adipocytes function as key regulators of the body’s overall energy metabolism.
Adipocytes are very active cells metabolically, responding to both, nervous and hormonal
stimuli.
Triglycerides are preferred for energy storage because:
1. Have no adverse osmotic effects on the cells
2. Most efficient form of energy storage ( high caloric density)
It is recognized as an endocrine tissue (releases hormones)
Thermally insulate the body and helps cushion and keep some organs in their place
