A1. Innovative Change
I would like to propose mandatory teaching and education for the families and patients
who are scheduled to receive anesthesia for their radiology scans. This proposal would assist the
patients and their family’s better perception of the benefits, risks, and generalized reasonable
requirement for anesthesia with such treatment proposals. This new change would implement
improved patient safety, outcomes, and insight to generalized anesthesia and the consequences
involved when it is loosely suggested for certain criteria and indications.
A1a. Authorized Proposed Change
‘See attached Verification Form’.
A1b. Organizational Sponsor Discussion
This proposal was discussed with the Radiology Nurse Preceptor. The sponsor
acknowledged that for selected cases, the use of general anesthesia is unjustified and unfounded
to be beneficial to the patient. The preceptor agreed that involving further knowledge and data
directly to the patients and support systems would be advantageous because an educated decision
whether the use of anesthesia is the appropriate route of care or if alternative procedures could be
considered. Having the patients and families more involved and aware of the risks, benefits, and
hazards associated with anesthesia would assist in ongoing quality and enhancement of care.
A1c. Proposed Changes
The sponsor did not make any adjustments at this time, as this modification would
require extensive consultations with additional supervisory roles and referring healthcare
providers. These conversations would require all providers be prepared and willing to deliver or
coordinate supplementary teachings and education with the patients, or the appropriate support
groups, when any radiology scan is referred to require anesthesia.
