Assignment 2
DUE DATE:13
JUNE 2025
, Question 1
1.1 Provide words and explain the place of articulation for each:
a) Palatal – cash
Explanation: The /ʃ/ sound (as in sh) is produced when the middle of the tongue
comes in contact with the hard palate. That’s why it’s called palatal.
b) Alveolar – dat
Explanation: The /t/ sound is made when the tongue touches the alveolar ridge
(just behind the upper front teeth). Hence, alveolar.
c) Labio-dental – favour
Explanation: The /v/ sound is produced by placing the bottom lip against the
upper teeth. Thus, labio-dental.
d) Velar – good
Explanation: The /g/ sound is made with the back of the tongue against the soft
palate (velum). Hence, velar.
e) Dental – th**in
Explanation: The /θ/ sound is made when the tongue touches the upper teeth.
This contact defines the dental articulation.
f) Glottal – uh-oh
Explanation: The glottal stop (as in the break between uh-oh) is made at the
glottis (vocal cords). That’s why it’s called glottal.
