ASSIGNMENT 2
DUE: 25 JUNE 2025

In this assignment, you will need to read learning units 1 and 2.

Question 1

1.1 Define the term “energy” and provide an example that shows your understanding.

Energy is the ability to do work or cause change. Living organisms use energy to grow,
move, and carry out all life processes.
For example a plant uses energy from the sun to make food through photosynthesis.

1.2 Identify the main source of energy for all living organisms on Earth.

The Sun is the main source of energy for all living organisms on Earth.

1.3 Explain why living organisms need energy.

Living organisms need energy to carry out essential life functions such as growth,
movement, reproduction, and responding to their environment. Without energy, cells cannot
function properly and life would not be possible.

1.4 Name the molecule that is considered the fundamental energy currency of cells.

The molecule is ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate).

1.5 State the difference between ATP and ADP.

ATP has three phosphate groups and stores more energy.

ADP (Adenosine Diphosphate) has two phosphate groups and stores less energy.
ATP becomes ADP when one phosphate group is removed to release energy.
