FICTION BOOK: “The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger

SECTION A: INTRODUCTION (150–200 words)

The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger is one such book for me. I selected it during a

period of emotional confusion and personal questioning, hoping it might offer some

insight into what I was feeling. The novel follows Holden Caulfield, a teenage narrator

who wanders New York City after being expelled from school, grappling with feelings of

alienation and identity confusion (Salinger, 1951). I was intrigued by Holden’s raw

honesty and the way he rejected societal expectations, which mirrored some of the

internal conflict I was experiencing. What intrigued me most was Holden’s intense desire

to protect innocence, particularly that of children, which revealed his inner vulnerability

beneath his outward rebellion. In one eloquent sentence: The Catcher in the Rye

impacted my life by helping me confront my own sense of disconnection and inspired me

to be more accepting of my emotional complexity and growth. Some books resonate so

deeply with your thoughts and feelings that they seem to understand you better than you

understand yourself.
