QUESTION 1

1.1 Explain the recruitment method used in the above scenario. Motivate your
answer. (3)

The recruitment method used in the scenario is referral recruitment. Lethabo’s case
was referred by the district level of the Department of Basic Education after
unsuccessful interventions at the school level. Referral is a formal method where
individuals are identified by professionals (teachers, psychologists, social workers)
based on certain behaviours or needs that align with the group’s purpose (Zastrow,
2017). This method is appropriate because it ensures that participants genuinely require
the services provided through group work.

1.2 In your view, which method would be relevant for orientating Tshilidzi and her
fellow members? Motivate your answer. (3)

The pre-group orientation method would be the most relevant. This method involves
meeting with each potential member before the group begins to explain the purpose,
structure, expectations, and confidentiality boundaries (Toseland & Rivas, 2017). It is
particularly effective with adolescents as it helps reduce anxiety, clarify roles, and build
trust with the facilitator. Given Tshilidzi’s defiant behaviour, early orientation would
provide a chance to build rapport and address misconceptions.
