,Teaching Additional Language (FAL and SAL) in FET Phase
Question 1
1.1 Differentiate between the concepts “paraphrasing” and “summarising”. (4)
Paraphrasing means restating information in your own words without changing the
original meaning. It is often roughly the same length as the original text.
Example:
Original: "Education is the key to success."
Paraphrase: "Learning helps people achieve success in life."
Summarising means giving a brief overview of the main points of a longer text. It is
shorter than the original and focuses only on the essential ideas.
Example:
Original: A paragraph about the benefits of education.
Summary: "Education improves opportunities and quality of life."
1.2 Explain with examples how you would teach the three listening phases in your
Grade 11 classroom. (21)
Listening has three phases: Pre-listening, While-listening, and Post-listening. These
phases help learners understand, interpret, and respond to spoken texts effectively.
a) Pre-listening Phase (7 marks)
This phase prepares learners for what they are about to hear. It activates prior
knowledge and sets a purpose for listening.
Strategies:
Introduce the topic using pictures, headlines, or short discussions.
Ask prediction questions like: "What do you think this story is about?"
, Teach key vocabulary they will hear in the listening passage.
Example:
Before listening to a speech about climate change, I will:
Show a short video/image of droughts or floods.
Ask learners, "What environmental problems do we face today?"
Teach words like “global warming,” “emissions,” and “climate.”
b) While-listening Phase (7 marks)
This is the active listening phase where learners engage with the audio.
Strategies:
Give learners specific tasks, like filling in a worksheet or answering questions
while listening.
Play the recording more than once, if necessary, for clarity.
Example:
While listening to a recorded news report on climate change, learners will:
Tick facts they hear.
Write down the three causes of climate change mentioned.
Note any solutions the speaker suggests.
c) Post-listening Phase (7 marks)
This phase allows learners to reflect, discuss, and apply what they’ve heard.
Strategies:
Ask comprehension questions.
