ASSIGNMENT 2 2025

Question 1

1.1 The alphabet m is a bilabial sound because it is articulated on both the upper
and lower lip. Provide words that contain the places of articulation provided below
and state why each has been given their name. Do not forget to underline the
alphabet that produces the sound.

The alphabet "m" is a bilabial sound because it is made by bringing both lips together.
This is why it is called bilabial "bi" means two, and "labial" means lips (Study Guide, p.
16).

a) Palatal
Word- yes
The sound /j/ in "yes" is made when the front of the tongue touches the hard palate, which
is the roof of the mouth. That is why it is called a palatal sound (Study Guide, p. 16).

b) Alveolar
Word- time
The sound /t/ in "time" is made when the tip of the tongue touches the alveolar ridge,
which is the ridge just behind the top front teeth. This makes it an alveolar sound (Study
Guide, p. 16).

c) Labio-dental
Word- fan
The sound /f/ in "fan" is produced when the bottom lip touches the top teeth, so it is called
a labio-dental sound – "labio" means lip and "dental" means teeth (Study Guide, p. 16).

d) Velar
