SC 165 Microbiology
Chapters 4-5 Review
Basics of Bacterial Metabolism and
Growth
, Chapter 4
Dynamics of Prokaryotic Growth
, Dynamics of Prokaryotic Growth

• Microbes are ubiquitous; meaning that they are found
everywhere, in every habitat, and even possibly on other planets
in the solar system!
• From the text: “Because of the medical significance of some
microbes, as well as the nutritional and industrial use of
microbial by-products, scientists must be able to grow
microorganisms in culture.”
• Binary fission – creates exponential growth (initially)
• Generation Time – amount of time it takes for a population to
double in number (in the case of most bacteria, the generation
time for 3 full generations is a mere hour! – think potato salad…)
