modifiers
- correct answer words that act to describe or qualify another word in such a way that it changes the
other word's meaning.
ex. hot pan, tall glass, skinny girl
misplaced modifiers
- correct answer a phrase or clause placed awkwardly in a sentence so that it appears to modify or refer
to an unintended word.
ex. "Allenby's troops included 200 rangers mounted on camels and D.H. Lawrence".
subject-verb agreement
- correct answer The person and number of the verb must match the person and the number of the
subject noun(s) or pronoun(s).
ex. The doctors operate on their patient
vs. The doctor operates on his patient.
sentence fragment
- correct answer A sentence that does not include a independent clause, so it cannot stand alone.
ex. If you are very quiet
pronoun-antecedent agreement
