African slaves began to outnumber the Europeans. The proportions of slaves ranged from about
1/3 in Cuba to more than 90% on many islands. Slave rebellions were common. As rebellions
became more frequent, European investors lost money. The cost of maintaining slaves grew
higher, and slavery was eventually abolished.



American Civil War 1861-1865. Between the Confederate South and the Union North.
Was the result of long-standing controversy over slavery and states' rights. Confederacy
collapsed, slavery was abolished, and 4 million slaves were freed.



Emancipation Proclamation President Abraham Lincoln signed this on January 1, 1863
changing the federal legal status of more than 3 million enslaved people in the designated areas
of the South from slave to free.
