Decimals -
Order of Operations - PEMDAS: "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally"
- Parenthesis
- simplify the Exponents
- Multiply & Divide from left to right
- perform Addition & Subtraction from left to right
Positive & Negative Numbers: ADDITION - ex. (+4) + (-8) = -4 (+4) + (-8) = +4
(+4) + (+8) = +12 (-4) + (-8) = -12
Positive & Negative Numbers: SUBTRACTION - Change the sign of the number after the
minus symbol and then follow the same rules used for addition.
ex. (+4) - (+8) = (+4) + (-8) = -4
Positive & Negative Numbers: MULTIPLICATION - If the signs are the same the product is
positive:
ex. (+4) x (+8) = +32 and (-4) x (-8) = +32
If the signs are opposite, the product is negative:
ex. (+4) x (-8) = -32 and (-4) x (+8) = -32
, When more than 2 factors are multiplied, the sign of the product is determined by how many
negatives are present: Odd=Negative, Even=Positive:
ex. (+4) x (-8) x (-2) = +64 and
(-4) x (-8) x (-2) = -64
Positive & Negative Numbers: DIVISION - As with multiplication, if the signs are the same,
the product is positive
If the signs are opposite, the product is negative
ex. (-4) divided by (+8) = -0.5
Decimals: ADDING & SUBTRACTING - The decimals must always be aligned
ex. 4.5 + 2 = 6.5 changed to 4.5 + 2.0 = 6.5
Decimals: MULTIPLYING - Work through the #'s as if they were whole. Once the final
product is calculated, count the # of places to the right of the decimal in both multiplier &
multiplic. Then count the # of places to the right of the answer and place the decimal in that
position.
ex. 12.3 x 2.56 (3 places to the right)
changes to 123 x 256 = 31488
Final product = 31.488
Decimals: DIVISION - ex. 4.9 into 24.5
The decimal was moved 1 place to the right to make a whole #, so the answer must be moved
one space to the right
changes to 49 into 245
