PSYC 1000 Test 3 Chapter 11 Motivation Tulane
Bethany Rollins Intro Psychology Exam Q’s and A’s
Motivation - -a need or desire that energizes and directs behavior
- Instinct Theory - -A view that explains human behavior as motivated by
automatic, involuntary, and unlearned responses.
- Drive Reduction Theory - -approach to motivation that assumes behavior
arises from physiological needs that cause internal drives to push the
organism to satisfy the need and reduce tension and arousal
Imbalance / need
aroused state/drive
behavior to reduce need
homeostasis
cant explain play or why we explore
- Arousal Theory - -A theory of motivation suggesting that people are
motivated to maintain an optimal level of alertness and physical and mental
activation.
- Incentive Theory - -A theory of motivation stating that behavior is directed
toward attaining desirable stimuli and avoiding unwanted stimuli.
- Instincts - -a complex behavior that is rigidly patterned throughout a
species and is unlearned
- Problems with Instinct Theory - -Most behaviors / mannerisms of animals
and humans aren't necessarily instinctual
It is unable to account for learning
- Homeostatisis - -the maintenance of a constant internal state in a
changing environment
- Arousal - -General activation level
There are individual differences for the optimal arousal level
- Maslow's Hierarchy - -A theory that arranges the five basic needs of
people into the order in which people strive to satisfy them
- 6 categories of needs - -1) Physiological Needs - hunger thirst
2) Safety and Security - to feel the world is organized and predictable
3) Relationships, Love and Affection - to be loved, a sense of belonging,
avoid loneliness
