Med School Exam 1questions and
answers
Hematoxylin & eosin ("H&E") - Answer Most common routine stain
Blue & pink pattern stain
Hematoxylin - Answer Blue & "basophilic"
- Cellular components w/ high amts of nucleic acids (nucleus & ribosomes)
- Calcium deposits
- ECM with glycosaminoglycans (less basophilic than above)
Eosin - Answer Pink & "acidophilic"/"eosinophilic"
- Membranes and membranous organelles (mitochondria, plasma membranes, smooth endoplasmic
reticulum)
- Extracellular materials such as collagen (less eosinophilic than intracellular organelles)
Wright's stain - Answer Used in blood smears.
Papanicolaou stain - Answer Used in cytologic smears such as cervical 'Pap smears'
Trichrome - Answer Type I collagen (aqua blue)
cytoplasm (red)
nuclei (black)
PAS - Answer Polysaccharides (pink)
Stains glycogen, delineates basement membranes, highlights cell walls of fungi
- Digestion w/ diastate removes glycogen from other PAS + material
