LEARNING UNIT 1 & 2: THE CONCEPTS AND KNOWLEDGE FOR
TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION IN CONTEXT
1. INTRODUCTION
Learning units 1 and 2 aim to enable student teachers to evaluate the concepts and
detailed knowledge required for Technology Education responsibly and purposefully in
unfamiliar but relevant contexts. The learning unit is divided into two Parts 1 &2. Part 1
starts from page 1-59 and Part 2 from 60 -100.
2. LEARNING OUTCOMES/OBJECTIVES
After the completion of this learning unit, you should be able to:
• Define relevant key concepts related to this learning unit: technology, Technology
Education and knowledge.
• Review the technological knowledge applicable to Technology Education and
digitisation.
• Research the technological knowledge applicable to Technology Education and
digitisation.
• Critique the principles and practices related to Technology Education.
3. DEFINING KEY CONCEPTS
Technology
The word "technology" is etymologically derived from the Greek word techné which is
translated as "art", "craft", or "skill" and logos refers to the study of techné. Techné is not
necessarily an activity. However, it is the capacity for action determined by a unique kind
of knowledge. Techné is rather defined as a habit or consistent characteristic to act in a
particular manner, with true logos concerned with making the product. In essence, techné
is a skill to construct an artifact and relies on the sound awareness of or reasoning about
an artifact to be developed (Emeam, 2023:45-48). The concept of technology effectively
embraces the whole human-built world. Technology influences reality in the sense that
the experience of making and transforming the world is reconciled by people's

perceptions of what technology makes possible. Essentially, all historians use the concept
"technology" in reference to ancient and contemporary methods of developing products
or knowledge on how to construct and apply the specific artifacts. An artifact is “a
manufactured object”. Structures such as buildings, cars, computers, and televisions are
some of the artifacts manufactured using Technology.
Different definitions of the concept Technology
Technology is a means to an end. It is a human activity. Everything depends on how
individuals manipulate technology in the appropriate manner as a means. Technology is
a means to fulfil a human purpose. Technology is defined as a collection of practices and
components. Technology is a collection of techniques.
Technology is described as an instrument or tool that controls and makes use of the
energy of nature and puts it to work to advance human needs. The combination of various
methods used reasonably to complete a task with less time and effort.
Technology is a phenomenon (a fact or situation that is observed to exist or happen,
especially one whose cause or explanation is questionable) that develops gradually and
continuously influences people's actions, information, and social settings. Technology is
considered as a sign or instance of guiding people towards the making and using of tools.
Technology is understood to be a combination of knowledge, skills and techniques.
According to the Department of Basic Education (DBE) in South Africa, technology can
be defined as the use of knowledge, skills, values, and resources to meet the people's
needs and wants by developing practical solutions to problems, with consideration of
social and environmental factors. Knowledge and skills are as important as the products
that have been developed. Without the proper knowledge and skills, a product might not
serve its intended purpose. In essence, the definitions of “technology” include devices,
human activities, and knowledge and skills.
Technology Education

, lOMoARcPSD|31863004
Technology Education is a field of study that provides learners with the opportunities to
develop technological literacy and acquire the essential knowledge to solve problems. It
entails critical evaluation of the purpose and effects of artifacts and the environment while
using the design to enhance Technology.
Technology subjects in South Africa were introduced into the curriculum because of the
need to produce engineers, technicians, and artisans required in modern society. It was
considered important to develop a society that is technologically literate. Technology
literacy refers “to the ability to use, understand, manage, and evaluate technology".
The aim of the Technology subject in South Africa is to stimulate learners to be innovative
and develop creative and critical thinking skills. In addition, Technology as a subject
teaches learners to effectively manage time and material resources. The subject provides
learners with the opportunities to work together as a team. These skills provide an
appropriate foundation for numerous Further Education Training (FET) subjects such as
Civil Technology, Mechanical Technology, Electrical Technology, Engineering Graphics
and Design, Physical Science, and Design.
The specific aims of the subject Technology in the Senior Phase are to:
• Develop and apply specific design skills to solve technological problems.
• Understand the concepts and knowledge used in Technology Education and use
them responsibly and purposefully.
• Appreciate the interaction between people's values and attitude, Technology,
society and the environment.
Amongst others, the unique features and scope of Technology Education specify that
learners should be provided with the opportunities to learn to solve problems in a creative
way, to use authentic contexts that are rooted in real-life situations, to combine thinking
in a manner that links abstract concepts to concrete understanding, to evaluate exiting
products and processes, and to use and engage with knowledge in a purposeful manner.
