The early modern period was a period of change. It changes social, economic but also
political structures in Europe. Structures which were not separate from each other but
intertwined and influenced one another. Changes such as religion and its influence on politics,
the impact of population growth on society, the end of feudalism and the start of
interconnection of markets and the growing merchant class. For this reason this essay will
concentrate on agreeing with the thesis of ‘Compared to 1500, the social, economic and
political structures of Europe were considerably transformed by 1800.



Social structures;

One of the most impactful changes was the population growth which influenced many aspects
of society. This population growth started in 1460 with a rapid growth of Europe’s
population. Which in itself is impactful but it also caused for new dynamics, due to the
growing interconnection of markets and intensification of trade. This population growth later
declined with the black death, but soon recovered and even doubled with the ‘babyboom’.
