, RSE4801 Assignment 2 – 2025
1. Define what ‘context’ means in research. (2 marks)
In research, context refers to the specific background or setting in which a study takes
place. It includes elements such as cultural, social, historical, economic, political, and
geographical factors that may influence the research process, participants’ responses,
and the interpretation of findings.
2. Based on the literature you have read, explain in some detail why
understanding ‘context’ in research is important. (8 marks)
Understanding context is vital because it ensures that the research is meaningful and
accurately reflects the environment in which participants live and interact. According to
Cohen, Manion, and Morrison (2018), taking context into account allows researchers to
interpret findings in a way that aligns with participants’ lived experiences, improving the
real-world relevance of the study. Without such consideration, researchers risk applying
inappropriate assumptions or generalisations that do not fit the study population.
Bryman (2016) adds that context influences how researchers choose their methods,
interact with participants, and analyse data. Being sensitive to contextual elements—
such as cultural norms or institutional frameworks—prevents ethical issues and
enhances the credibility of the research. It also allows researchers to uncover deeper
insights by understanding how environmental factors shape behaviours, beliefs, and
experiences.
3. Discuss how understanding context in research improves the validity and
reliability and/or trustworthiness of the research findings. (8 marks)
Recognising the role of context in research strengthens validity by ensuring that the
tools and approaches used are appropriate for the participants’ cultural and social
backgrounds. For example, using locally relevant language and symbols increases the
