1.1 Three Communicative Situations
➤ Situation 1: Internal Retrenchment Announcement
Context:
In 2020, SABC’s executive leadership notified staff of its decision to retrench
approximately 400 employees. The communication was delivered via formal
internal channels, including staff meetings and emails, within the organizational
environment.
Directionality & Interaction:
The information flow was primarily one-directional, from management to
employees, and the format was formal. Initial opportunities for feedback were
minimal.
Role/Motivation:
Management’s goal was to restructure the organisation and reduce financial
burdens due to budgetary constraints and operational inefficiencies.
➤ Situation 2: Worker Protests and Strike Actions
Context:
In response to the retrenchment plans, workers and trade unions launched
protests at SABC offices and issued public statements. These actions were both
physical and mediated through news outlets.
Directionality & Interaction:
This was an example of interactive, two-way communication. The messages
were emotionally charged and aimed at engaging both the SABC leadership and
the wider public.
