APPROACH TO FOLLOW
• Follow a logical approach to your studies. Remember that the LEARNING
OUTCOMES that are provided at the beginning of each learning unit are THE
THINGS THAT YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO after you have completed that
particular learning unit. So start there!
• Make sure that YOU CAN DO what is required. For instance: The first learning
outcome of Learning Unit 1 states that you must be able to define strategy, strategic
planning and strategic management. If you ensure that you are able to do this, you
can basically be asked any question on these concepts.
• Furthermore, look at the SELF-EVALUATION QUESTIONS provided in Tutorial 101.
also make sure that you can answer the past EXAM PAPERS uploaded on myUnisa.
- you can use these resources to asses yourself to determine whether you
understand the work.

, HOW TO APPROACH A CASE STUDY IN THE EXAM
Students often lose unnecessary marks or run out of time in the exam because they
approach the case study wrong. The follow steps are suggested:
Read the questions first as this will indicate to you what information you are going to
need to answer each question.
1. Read the case study carefully and mark the section(s) that is/are applicable to a
particular question. You can do this by highlighting or underlining the relevant
sentence or paragraph.
2. Make notes in the margin on the left or right side of the case study. Make sure
that the format you use for the notes will direct you to the question that it applies
to. Simply writing the question number is sufficient.
3. Identify the theory relevant to each question.
4. Start answering the questions, using the theory as structure and the information
in the case study to apply your knowledge to each question.
3
, HOW TO STRUCTURE ESSAY TYPE QUESTIONS
1. Identify the relevant theory.
2. Use the theory to structure you
answer by using headings and
paragraphs. Imagine that as being
the skeleton of your essay (refer blue
figure).
3. Under each heading provide the
theoretical discussion.
4. Lastly, put the red flesh (practical
application) around each part of the
skeleton. Depending on the question
this could be in the form of
examples, suggestions etc.
