Executive Functions
Executive functions allow us to:
plan an action,
adapt to new situations,
inhibit inappropriate behaviors,
maintain attention,
switch between tasks,
solve problems,
demonstrate mental flexibility
Here are the different EFs:
Attention Updating Planning
Mental flexibility Problem solving Emotional
regulation
Executive functions are mainly in the frontal lobe (shown through Goldstein) but
also in the parietal lobe. More details:
Hypo behavioral dysexecutive syndrome: dorsolateral prefrontal cortex,
anterior cingulate area
Hyper behavioral dysexecutive syndrome: ventromedian prefrontal cortex,
orbitofrontal
Updating: dorsolateral prefrontal cortex
Inhibition: orbitofrontal prefrontal cortex
Flexibility: left parietal region
Updating, inhibition and flexibility are also in parietal regions.

, Orbitofrontal = orbitobasal
dorso = upper
ventro = lower
lateral = on the sides
median = in the middle
orbito = above the orbits (eyes)

Theoretical Models of Executive Functions
Norman and Shallice
Automatic pathway vs Controlled pathway
Routine behavior, we SAS (supervisory
don't pay much attentional system):
attention supervises actions
when there's conflict,
complex choice,
novelty
