, QUESTION 1: THE CURRICULUM AND ASSESSMENT POLICY STATEMENT
1.1 Describe the oral activity and its objective.
Oral Activity: "How-To Show and Tell"
Each Grade 4 learner brings a familiar household item (e.g. a toothbrush, spoon, or
toy) and gives a short oral presentation (1–2 minutes) explaining how to use it. They
must include a greeting, a step-by-step explanation using time words (first, then,
next, finally), and a short conclusion. The rest of the class listens and may ask one
question after each presentation.
Objective:
To develop learners‘ ability to give clear oral instructions, use sequence vocabulary,
and improve confidence in speaking to an audience. The activity also develops
listening skills through the question-and-answer phase.
1.2 Explain how it builds on specific Foundation Phase listening and speaking
outcomes.
This activity builds on the Grade 3 CAPS outcomes which include:
“Give and follow simple instructions and directions” (Section 3.3.3 CAPS
Grades R–3);
“Use appropriate language to express needs, feelings, and ideas” and “Listen
to and respond to oral texts”.
By Grade 4, learners are expected to expand on these skills by using longer
utterances, organizing ideas logically, and adjusting their language for different
contexts and purposes (e.g. instructional talk).
1.3 Show how it aligns with Intermediate Phase CAPS expectations for oral
language use.
This activity aligns with CAPS (Grades 4–6, Section 3.2) by:
Encouraging learners to give instructions clearly;
Helping them to structure oral texts using sequence words;
