aboard or leaves a ship that rates special attention such as a senior officer or a high- ranking
civilian official. To carry out this honorary ceremony, the BMOW (boatswains mate of the watch)
blows a special call on the boatswain's pipe, while anywhere from two to eight side boys
(depending on the rank) line up at attention on both sides facing each other forming a human P-
way for the official to pass through. The side boys salute on the first note of the pipe, holding
their salute as the person being honored walks through the passageway, and finishing the salute
together on the last note of the pipe.



Describe the courtesies rendered during Colors and/or the National Anthem - ANSWER When
not underway, commissioned ships display the ensign from the flagstaff at the stern and the
union jack from the jack staff at the bow from 0800 to sunset. Ashore the ensign is hoist from
0800 to sunset. While aboard or ashore the motions of the senior officer shall be present and if
aboard the PREP pennant shall be flow 5 minutes before colors. On Memorial Day (with a 21-
gun salute) and on the death of an official or officers listed in US navy regsulations, the ensign,
union jack and the PREP pennant will be flown all the way to the top of the flagstaff and then
lowered to half-mast. If the national anthem is playing in two different places the overpowering
music is the one you follow. If in a forging port the national anthem of that country is played
immediately following morning colors and then any other foreign nations represented.
