Human Resource Management for Line Managers

Question 1 (5 marks)

Explain how strategic human resource planning (SHRP) and recruitment and
selection are used together to ensure that an organisation has sufficient staff
with the required skills, knowledge and experience to do the work.

Strategic human resource planning (SHRP) helps a company look into the future and
figure out what kinds of workers it will need — how many, in which departments, and
with what skills. It’s all about planning ahead so the business doesn’t run into a shortage
of people or end up with the wrong kinds of skills. Once the company knows what it
needs, the recruitment and selection process kicks in. Recruitment involves advertising
jobs and attracting the right people, while selection is about choosing the best person
for the role. These two processes work hand in hand: SHRP tells the HR team what
kind of people are needed, and recruitment and selection make sure those people are
found and hired. When done properly, they ensure the company is never caught off
guard and always has capable staff in place.
