Assignment 1
Select a poem from one of the South African poets discussed in Lesson 2 – Roy
Campbell, HIE Dhlomo, or Mongane Wally Serote. It can be one of the prescribed
poems for this course, or another poem that you found while conducting your own
research. Write an essay of 1200–1500 words in which you discuss how and why the
selected poem can be viewed as an example of Modernism.
While it will be useful to conduct a distant and close reading of the poem before you
begin writing your essay, remember that your essay should be argumentative. In other
words, you need to develop an argument in which you prove that the selected poem is
an example of Modernism.
