1. Defence Mechanisms? (Immunity) - ANSWER-Nonspecific Immunity:
-Body's reaction to any thing it doesn't recognize as normal body substance
Two lines of defence in fighting threats:
-First line of defence:
Mechanical barriers - intact skin and mucous membranes
Chemical barriers - tears, stomach acids saliva, perspiration
Reflexes - coughing, sneezing, vomiting, and diarrhea
-Second line of defence:
Phagocytes - white blood cells that digest and destroy micro-organisms
Inflammation - when tissues are injured or irritated
Fever - stimulates phagocytosis (the ingestion of bacteria and decreases the
ability of certain pathogens to multiply)
