,HSY1511 Assignment 4 (Portfolio) - Semester 1, 2025

Due Date: 8 May 2025

Section A: Introduction

Personal Statement
My name is Thandiwe Moyo. I am a first-year student at UNISA and I have a deep
interest in understanding how Africa's past has shaped its present and future.

Portfolio Purpose
The purpose of this portfolio is to showcase the work I have completed in the HSY1511
module throughout the semester. It includes my reflections, assessments, and final
essay. The portfolio helps me track my learning journey and see how I have grown in
my understanding of history and in my academic skills.

Course Overview: HSY1511 Course Objectives

 To gain an understanding of significant developments in the history of Africa and
the world from the 17th century to the early 21st century.
 To acquire an appreciation of the critical place of Africa in the history of the
world.
 To gain an understanding of some major themes in the history of Africa and the
world over the last four centuries, and to come to understand the important place
of Africa in these developments.
 Develop an understanding of the historical roots of current African society,
acquire respect, appreciation and understanding of different societies, cultures
and points of view.
 To produce effective learning, analytical and critical skills which are appropriate
to the discipline of History and are transferable to other disciplines and other
contexts.

, Assessment 1 Reflection

1. Historians study the past by collecting evidence from sources like books, diaries,
newspapers, oral histories, and more. They critically examine these sources to
find out what happened, why it happened, and what effects it had. They also look
at the context of the time to understand the events better.
2. From studying history, I have learned analytical skills like how to look at different
points of view, how to question the reliability of sources, and how to make
arguments based on evidence. These skills are useful in many subjects and in
life in general.
3. A good paragraph starts with a topic sentence that introduces the main idea. It is
followed by supporting sentences that explain or give examples. It ends with a
concluding sentence that links back to the main idea or connects to the next
paragraph.
4. A well-structured essay has an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
The introduction presents the topic and states the main argument. Each body
paragraph discusses a point that supports the argument. The conclusion brings
everything together and restates the main points clearly.
5. Academic dishonesty in history includes plagiarism (copying someone’s work
without giving credit), cheating, using fake references, and getting someone else
to do your work. It is important to be honest and original because history is about
facts and careful interpretation of evidence.

Section B: Essay Planning (Assessment 2)

Assessment 2

Topic: The role of African women in anti-colonial resistance.

Main idea: African women played important roles in resisting colonial rule through
protests, spiritual leadership, and everyday acts of resistance.
