In many cases, the early symptoms of tardive dyskinesia disappear when the
antipsychotic medication is discontinued. In other cases, however, early symptoms are
not reversible and may progress.

Nursing interventions: No known treatment. Discontinuing the drug does not always
relieve symptoms. Occurs in 15% to 20% of patients taking these drugs for more than 2
years. Eating difficulties; malnutrition can occur because of tongue and mouth
involvement. Frequent screening with the AIMS test can help detect TD in early stages.
