Topic 7 DQ 1 (Obj. 7.1)
What disorders are common in late adulthood, and how are they typically
treated? What can we do as a society to help individuals who suffer from
aging disorders?
Hi everyone,
As we witness the aging of our loved ones, it can be challenging to see them
face the complexities of late adulthood but as we know it's apart of life.
During this stage of life, many individuals experience disorders such as
Alzheimer's disease, depression, and anxiety (Comer & Comer, 2021).
Alzheimer's, a common neurodegenerative disorder, is managed with
medications like donepezil (Aricept), rivastigmine (Exelon), galantamine
(Razadyne), and memantine (Namenda), alongside cognitive-behavioral
techniques (Comer & Comer, 2021). Depression and anxiety in older adults
are often treated with antidepressants, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and
social support (Comer & Comer, 2021). As a society, we can enhance their
well-being by raising awareness about mental health, expanding healthcare
accessibility, and establishing robust social support systems. These
measures will help reduce social isolation and improve the quality of life for
older adults.
