Impact of Self-Awareness
According to an article on edutopia.org, self-awareness is critical in improved learning
because it helps students focus more on what they still need to learn (Price-Mitchell, 2015). When
teachers create an atmosphere for students to reflect, monitor, and evaluate their learning, students
will become more flexible, productive, and self-efficient.
Self-Awareness Skills Activities
One instructional activity I can use to teach self-awareness is reflection questions at the end
of each week on Fridays. Students will spend 5 minutes responding to questions such as:
● What did you accomplish that makes you proud this week?
● What inspired you this week?
● What strengths did you use this week?
● What challenges did you overcome?
● What was your least favorite activity this week?
These questions allow me to see what students think if it is the same each week and monitor how
their mindset changes. It will also guide me in intentionally planning support for all students moving
forward.
, Another activity I can use to teach self-awareness is having this or that questions. The
activity will present students with difficult moral or personal decisions (e.g., "Would you rather be
popular or respected?"). Discuss choices in small groups. This activity is crucial in enhancing critical
thinking about values and priorities. This will encourage open communication and active listening,
which allows students to express their thoughts and emotions clearly and freely. (Price-Mitchell,
2015).
