, Question 1
1.1 Components of the Communication Process (6)
The communication process between SARN and RAWU involved the following
components:
Sender: John Smith (SARN’s Head of HR) initiated communication regarding
wage increases.
Encoding: John crafted an email that outlined SARN’s rationale for the proposed
increase.
Message: The content explained the modest wage increase, justified by
economic conditions and a focus on sustainability.
Medium/Channel: The initial message was sent via email (written
communication).
Receiver: Thuli Nkosi, President of RAWU, received the communication.
Decoding: Thuli interpreted the message and judged the offer as insufficient.
Feedback: Thuli responded via a telephone call, rejecting the offer and
threatening escalation if demands were not met.
Noise: Different perceptions of "reasonable" increases and emotional tensions
acted as barriers to effective understanding.
1.2 Type of Communication (3)
The specific type of communication that occurred was formal communication.
Substantiation: The initial communication was through official channels (email
from John Smith) and concerned important organisational matters (wages).
Although Thuli later used a phone call (verbal), it remained formal as it pertained
to official negotiations.
