HLT 307V Week 5 DQ 2
Considering what you have learned throughout this course, what communication and
teamwork skills and behaviors can you apply in the health care organization for which you
work or hope to work to improve patient care and to advance your professional career?
What can you do today to set your professional plans in motion?

In nursing, effective communication and teamwork skills are not just imperative, they are also
incredibly rewarding. As nursing professionals, we work closely with our peers and
interprofessional teams. These skills are the key to our successful collaboration. Our limited
scope of practice necessitates that other healthcare professionals perform certain roles, such as
prescribing medication and administering therapy. But it's our ability to communicate effectively
that ensures seamless coordination of care. We share data and opinions on patients' conditions,
and we communicate with patients and other stakeholders to understand their needs and how we
can work together to improve outcomes. Therefore, it's so crucial for us to possess the necessary
communication and teamwork skills to carry out our roles effectively in the workplace.
Effective communication skills are vital in care settings; among them, empathy is of utmost
importance. Empathy refers to the ability to comprehend and relate to another person's
circumstances by putting oneself in their position. It also involves listening without bias or
preconceived notions while patients or colleagues share their experiences (Leal-Costa et al.,
2021). As professionals, it is crucial to refrain from passing judgment on an individual seeking
care for an infection. Instead, they should provide unwavering support and lend an empathetic
ear to their concerns. An essential skill in this regard is active listening. This encompasses being
fully present in the moment when spoken to and responding appropriately. For instance, nodding
in agreement can signal comprehension and encourage patients to express themselves more
freely. Active listening fosters seamless communication and assures patients they are heard and
understood. It is essential to note the distinction between hearing and listening. Listening goes
beyond merely hearing the words; it involves comprehending the message (Leal-Costa et al.,
2021). Nurses must possess active listening skills and pay close attention to details during
communication.
Professionals must exchange information and respond to others. For example, when patients
express their problems, professionals must listen and respond (Leal-Costa et al., 2021).
Teamwork is greatly influenced by feedback. It is essential for nurses to not only transmit
information but also express their perspectives on the received information. To effectively
communicate, they should utilize nonverbal skills. Non-verbal cues are a powerful tool to convey
messages that may not be expressed in words. For example, nodding can signify agreement.
Smiling can demonstrate appreciation. Healthcare professionals must integrate facial and hand
movements to enhance their communication. By combining verbal and nonverbal
communication, they can ensure that their message is comprehensible (Raeissi et al., 2021).
Effective written communication is critical in healthcare, requiring understanding technology
and channels for different audiences.
